John Verge Greek Revival / Regency villa for Dr James Bowman · Built 1833–1837 · Standing — private · NSW SHR #00158

Dr James Bowman, principal colonial surgeon and Macarthur son-in-law, paid John Verge for a marine villa above Blackwattle Bay — among the best-documented domestic builds of the 1830s. Bankruptcy, Anglican then Benedictine colleges, maternity hospital, factories and a freeway resumption nearly erased it. Save Lyndhurst, a green ban and Clive Lucas’s restoration for the Historic Houses Trust pulled the wreck back; today it is again a private house. Sister Verge story to Toxteth Park across Glebe.

Site & setting

Western end of a Glebe ridge once looking to Blackwattle Bay (now Wentworth Park). Shepherd’s Lectures on Landscape Gardening described Lyndhurst as a model genteel marine residence — oval coach sweep, shrubberies, kitchen garden, indigenous trees retained (quotations via Crittenden / SHR). Darghan Street now cuts close to the western façade; curtilage is a reduced vegetated yard with later HHT-era planting (Canary Island palms etc. — SHR physical description).

Timeline

• 1833 – Bowman buys from Cowper; Verge selects site / prepares plans (AprJun) (SHR).
• 1834–37 – House built; service wings, stables, pleasure grounds (SHR).
• 1842 – Bowman financial crisis (AA Company); Macarthurs take possession; lease toward college use (SHR).
• 1846 – Bowman dies.
• 184749 – St James’s Theological College at Lyndhurst under Bishop Broughton; Tractarian controversy; closes (SHR / ADB).
• 1852 – Sold to Roman Catholic Church — St Mary’s College (Benedictine); eastwest wing added (SHR).
• 1877 – St Mary’s closes; 1878 Morris Asher buys house; subdivisions accelerate.
• 1890–1905 – Verandahs/porch demolished; divided into terraces; Agnes Watt’s Lyndhurst Private School in one terrace (SHR).
• Lying-in hospital / later industrial uses (broom, soap, ice cream, joinery, pickle, leather — SHR).
• 1925–72 – Aubrey Bartlett ownership until DMR resumption (SHR).

• 2005 – Sold to private owners; further Lucas works.
• Today – Private SHR villa; no routine museum opening.

Architecture & interiors

Large two-storey house on semi-basement; five bays by three; restrained Greek Revival — symmetrical planning, breakfronts, classical portico, verandahs, vaulted plaster ceilings, Greek Revival stone exterior and timber interior architraves (HHT / SHR). Central hallway to entertaining rooms with French doors to terrace. 1890 terrace subdivision and factory abutments wrecked much fabric; 1979–88 reconstruction restored hall, dining, drawing, library and later garden (SHR). Flag reconstruction vs surviving original: Lucas record volumes exist do not invent lost joinery schedules.

What stands today

Lyndhurst stands as a private State Heritage villa. Not a Sydney Living Museums ticketed museum (HHT left 2005). Street viewing from Darghan Street; respect privacy. Occasional Glebe Society access historically by owner goodwill do not advertise open hours without confirmation.
