On the Ginahgulla ridge, Trahlee is one of Bellevue Hill’s early stone mansions — Fairfax leasehold before Ginahgulla, Sheldon family seat for half a century, then subdivided and converted. It is local heritage, not State; keep that distinction clean.

Site & setting

Ginahgulla Road ridge of Bellevue Hill — FairfaxKnox–Cooper marine-villa country with harbour glimpses toward Double Bay. Mature pines (Bunya, Norfolk Island) are part of the LEP listing. Curtilage reduced by successive Sheldon and post-1956 subdivisions; house remains the landmark behind a gated forecourt (streetscape / agent descriptions). Neighbours in the heritage streetscape include Ginahgulla / Fairfax House (Scots College), Caerleon, Rona.

Timeline

• 1 Jan 1858 – Threlkeld lease from Point Piper Estate (Woollahra).
• 1860s – Stone mansion built (Woollahra).
• 1866 – Lease to Sir James Reading Fairfax; Fairfax occupancy by end of decade (Woollahra; Sands 1869 cited there).
• Jun 1877 – John Fairfax dies; James offers Trahlee for sale as first-class, highly-finished, commodious family mansion” with 5 acres of ornamental grounds; moves to Ginahgulla (Woollahra / SMH via Woollahra).
• By 1878 – Joseph Thompson, “Capitalist of Trahlee” (Woollahra).
• 1902–05 – Brown transfer; freehold; Sheldon purchase (Woollahra).
• 1905–56 – Sir Mark & Lady Blanche Sheldon residence (Woollahra plaque).
• 1919 – Proposed subdivision plan shows house footprint, outbuildings, tennis court, garden fabric (Woollahra).
• 1927 / 1934 – Sheldon subdivisions along Fairfax Road; curtilage ~3¼ acres (Woollahra).
• Jul 1955 / Oct 1956 – Deaths of Lady Sheldon and Sir Mark; contents sale; 17-lot subdivision; Sheldon Place named; reserve dedicated (Woollahra).
• Later – Converted to flats; LEP heritage item (Woollahra).
• 6 Oct 2023 – Sir Mark Sheldon KBE plaque unveiled at Trahlee (Woollahra).

Architecture & interiors

Large stone house; LEP protects house and interiors, garden and significant pines. Secondary sources call the composition Georgian Revival — do not over-specify mouldings or room schedules without a CMP citation. Prefer streetscape reading of forecourt, massing and garden trees; interiors are private apartments.
