The Abbey – 272 Johnston Street – Annandale – NSW

The Abbey – 272 Johnston Street – Annandale – NSW

Victorian Free / Rustic Gothic sandstone mansion · Built 18811882 · Standing — private · Local heritage (LEP I65) · RNE / National Trust

John Young’s skyline dare on Johnston Street — tower, gargoyles, cloister, Masonic geometry — anchors the row Sydneysiders call the Witches’ Houses. Oybin (Blackmann, 1880) and Highroyd (Young pair with Hockingdon) stand in the same elevated sandstone wall. Flats, Davis-family bohemia and a four-year twenty-first-century restoration later, The Abbey is again a single private house. Pair this post with Hockingdon and Annandale House on the blog.

Site & setting

High western side of Johnston Street boulevard on the former George Johnston Annandale grant — Young’s North Annandale / Sydney Freehold vision from the late 1870s (Heritage NSW; Annandale House draft for the 1799 farm predecessor). Houses sit above a continuous sandstone wall, palisade and gothic arch. Young’s own Kentville (demolished, subdivided after 1907) stretched from The Abbey toward the bay with early bowling greens (Heritage NSW).

The Abbey site purchased from neighbour Blackmann January 1882; an earlier small building retained as kitchen/servants’ quarters (Heritage NSW).

Architecture & interiors

Rock-faced sandstone; steep slate gables; arcading; crenellated parapets; traceried windows; quatrefoils; copper-clad tower with gargoyles; cloister (Heritage NSW). Three levels on sloping site: main house to Johnston Street; middle kitchen/servants; western stables/“ballroom” to rear lane. Interiors: stencil work, Moyr-Smith Minton tiles, built-in Gothic furniture, frescos / hand-painted medieval and bird panels; Lyon & Cottier; Parnell Wressel Johnson artwork (Heritage NSW / ArchitectureAu).

Early reinforced concrete floor with iron railway lines — Young pioneer concrete (Heritage NSW research criterion).

Rumour that gargoyles were taken from St Mary’s Cathedral (Young as builder there) — no proof (localnotes / Heritage). Masonic symbolism and possible lodge use — believed / layout analogy; Young highest-ranking Mason noted in secondary sources — keep as belief, not proven lodge minutes.

People & anecdotes

John Young (1827–1907) — builder, Mayor of Leichhardt, Annandale promoter, freemason; lived Kentville, not proven at The Abbey. C.H.E. Blackmann — Oybin. William Wardell — soft design attribution. Dr Geoffrey Davis — Push; long custodianship 1959–2008. Michael Hogan & Ann Sherry — 2009– restoration clients. Alan Croker / Design 5 — award-winning conservation.

Cross-link Hockingdon (264) and demolished Annandale House farm centre.

What stands today

The Abbey stands as a private Inner West heritage mansion. Admire tower, wall and arch from Johnston Street / Weynton Street footpaths; interiors are not a museum. Related Oybin and Highroyd remain private dwellings in the same precinct (Highroyd paired with Hockingdon on this blog).
