Victorian Filigree villa Built 1885 · Standing — Mosman Council; SHR #00069

On the Military Road ridge, set back behind stone and iron, Boronia is the twin that survived. Its sister Telopea is buried under later Mosman fabric; Boronia kept its carriage loop, filigree verandahs, and enough garden to still read as a Victorian villa beside Spit Junction. Library, council offices, restaurant, wedding venue — and, as of recent years, a closed house waiting on its next chapter. The live post called it Baronia. The registers, the CMP, and the street all say Boronia.

Site & setting

Boronia faces south to Military Road, set well back in an open formal Victorian garden behind a stone fence with iron cresting and impressive gates. SHR notes a circular carriage drive / loop south of the front door — a locally rare remnant of Victorian approach large lawns, and specimen trees including evergreen magnolia, camphor laurel, and a pair of lemon-scented gums framing the gates.

The Aboriginal Country is that of the Cammeraygal people of the Guringai / Kuringgai language group (Mosman / Middle Harbour).

European Mosman’s second-phase Victorian ridge development put affluent business houses on large allotments along newly opened roads — Boronia and Telopea as a matched pair with shared garden and entrance on the old Zahel / Kearey land story recorded in the Mosman CMP.

Reservoir Park and the Spit Junction town centre sit in the same civic cluster; Council ownership from 1952 locked in a public-garden setting that private subdivision elsewhere erased.

Timeline

• 1855 – Crown grant context to Vinzenz Zahel noted in local significance statements (CMP / local inventory).
• 1885 – James and John Kearey build twin freestanding villas Boronia and Telopea, attributed to Sheerin & Hennessy; shared garden and entrance.
• 1890s depression – Kearey carriage business collapses; assets including Boronia sold.
• 1896 – Advertised sale; George Willis Godwin purchases Boronia; Godwin family occupancy begins (George d. 1940; Olive to 1951).

Architecture & interiors

Victorian Filigree done properly: two storeys of brick stuccoed and lined to simulate ashlar; hipped slate main roof; verandah roof in corrugated metal historically painted in wide stripes.

The double-storey verandah is a full cast-iron ensemble columns, friezes, brackets, balustrades — emphasised at the centre by a gable. SHR records the iron balustrade pattern as NSW design No. 90 (1881) by Fletcher, Bennett & Frew, Sydney ironfounders.

Front boundary: stone fence, cast-iron fencing, gates — an “unusual assemblage” in the register’s words. Internals: some original elements survive; library and office eras altered fabric; 1985 campaign restored and adapted for hospitality. The NE wing and Art Nouveau glazed bay are late-Victorian / Federation overlays that the CMP treats as significant layers, not rubbish.

Twin planning with Telopea is rare for Victorian villa development on the Mosman ridge — even though Telopea itself is no longer readable as a pair.

People & anecdotes

James and John Kearey (Keary in some spellings) were Newtown / Sydney carriage builders whose Pitt Street premises featured in the Australian Town and Country Journal (1878). They built themselves matching villas named for Australian native plants — Boronia and Telopea — then lost them in the 1890s crash. James and Ellen in Boronia; John and Lucy in Telopea until Johns death in 1894.

George Willis Godwin (money broker, Castlereagh Street) and Olive Mildred Godwin held Boronia for half a century. Granddaughter Patricia Judy Godwin later recalled the huge rear room that had been the billiard room, the long drawing room, potting shed, stables zone, chooks and trees — domestic Mosman before the library shelves arrived.

Council’s 1952 purchase matters beyond nostalgia: Mosman was early to the Library Act world, and Boronia became the municipal library in a heritage house beside the junction — social significance the SHR leans on. Later restaurant decades made it a wedding-and-high-tea landmark; community advocacy for public access to house and garden is part of why the place still has a lobby.

Boronia stands, State-heritage listed, still in Mosman Council ownership at 624–632 Military Road.

Grounds have long been part of the public landscape near Spit Junction; the house itself has been closed to casual hospitality use since the early 2020s pending the All Saint Clinic heritage fit-out (confirm opening status before publish).
