No Nutcote post exists yet on this blog so this is a new scrapbook from the State Heritage Register and the Nutcote Trust, not a polish of a thin album. It is smaller than most mansions on this scrapbook, but culturally outsized: May Gibbs lived and drew here for forty-four years, and the Save Nutcote campaign became a national heritage fight.

Site & setting

Steep harbourside allotment falling west to Neutral Bay; sandstone outcrops and remnant native vegetation below the cottage; cottage sited mid-block on a sandstone ridge (SHR). Eastern garden toward Wallaringa Avenue keeps cottage-garden character; brick paths, portico, lattice screens (SHR). Studio and dining open to a balcony overlooking the bay — the working view Gibbs used for decades.

Timeline

  • 17 Jan 1877 – Cecilia May Gibbs born, Surrey; family emigrates 1881; WA childhood at “The Harvey” shapes bush imagery (SHR).
  • 1913–16 – Gumnut babies; Gum Nut Babies / Gum Blossom Babies (SHR).
  • 1919 – Marries James Ossoli Kelly; later flats at Runnymede (Kurraba Point) then Derry, Phillips Street (SHR).
  • 1922 – Mother purchases Wallaringa Avenue foreshore site (SHR / Trust).
  • 1924–Feb 1925 – Waterhouse design; Gray builds; Gibbs & Kelly move in February 1925; total investment cited £5,000 (SHR / Trust).
  • 1925–67 Bib and Bub comic strip produced at Nutcote until 1967; garden increasingly inspirational from 1950s (SHR).
  • 1928 – Garage / flatette built (SHR).
  • 1939 – Husband dies; later years more reclusive (Trust).
  • 27 Nov 1969 – May Gibbs dies; leaves Nutcote to UNICEF (unable to hold property under charter — Trust); rights/royalties to children’s charities (SHR).
  • 1970–71 – Contents auctioned; property sold (SHR / Trust).
  • 1986–88 – National Trust classification; North Sydney heritage listing; Save Nutcote campaign; PCO on house, harbourside garden and part of front garden (SHR).
  • 1990–91 – North Sydney Council purchases for $2.86 million; leases to Nutcote Trust (SHR / Trust).
  • 1 May 1994 – Museum opened by Elizabeth Durack after restoration to late-1920s / early-1930s appearance (SHR).
  • Today – Council-owned house museum with tearoom, shop, garden events check current hours before publishing.

Architecture & interiors

Single-storey rectangular Mediterranean cottage: roughly rendered and painted cavity brick; terracotta pantile roof; arched portico and wrought-iron balcony to the water; louvred shutters; pillared entrance portico (SHR). Eight rooms plus verandah/porch/entry/hall; basement laundry/lobby/third bedroom (SHR). Living hall with dark-stained timber joinery, jarrah floors, arched windows Early English / baronial Waterhouse character inside a Mediterranean shell (Trust). Studio interconnected with dressing room and bedroom — art at the centre of the plan (Trust). Prefer Trust / Cazneaux Australian Home Beautiful 1926 evidence over inventing furniture inventories.

People & anecdotes

May Gibbs — cartoonist, illustrator, children’s author; studio overlooking the Australiana garden. James Ossoli Kelly — husband; diaries and letters feed the restoration evidence base (Trust). B.J. Waterhouse — fashionable domestic architect; Nutcote among his smallest houses (Trust). Campaigners of the late 1980s turned a threatened harbour cottage into a national conservation story (SHR).

Nutcote stands as a ticketed house museum (North Sydney Council / Nutcote Trust). Typical published hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 11am3pm — verify on maygibbs.com.au / Council pages before publish. Pair with Hollowforth (same Kurraba shelf) and with other Waterhouse domestic work on the lower North Shore.
