Greystanes House – Greystanes / Pemulwuy – NSW
Colonial Georgian mansion · Built c.1836–1840 · Demolished 1946 (DoS: 1950s window — flagged)
Nelson Simmons Lawson named the place for the grey basalt “stanes” on Prospect Hill — Scottish stone under Australian sun — and put a gentleman’s house on the eastern slope his explorer father William Lawson had gathered. Stables, coach house, olive avenues, then quarry capital and wartime billets. The house is gone; the gates on Greystanes Road still announce an estate that became a suburb and a metal pit.
At a glance
- Location: eastern side of Prospect Hill — today’s Greystanes / Pemulwuy (Cumberland LGA); Darug Country
- Built: c.1836–1840 for Nelson Simmons Lawson (DoS constructed milestone; Wikipedia/Cumberland 1836)
- Architect: likely Edward Hallen (brother-in-law) per Cumberland interpretation signage — unsigned; do not state as proven
- Style: grand Georgian colonial mansion with stables and coach house; “Old English” picturesque garden described in local interpretation (olives, elms, hawthorns, jacarandas)
- Key owners: Nelson & Honoria Lawson; later Arthur Frederick Smart (from May 1884; estate expanded to ~464 acres — gates/lodge likely Smart-era per Cumberland); Major Phillip Charley (quarrying interest); NSW Blue Metal Company (1930s)
- Fate: Military occupation WWII; demolished 1946 when Blue Metal regained control (Cumberland / Wikipedia / Boral). DoS lists demolition 1950–1960 — conflict flagged. Gates remain on Greystanes Road.
Site & setting
William Lawson (of Blaxland–Lawson–Wentworth fame) acquired Prospect Hill country c.1810 (local accounts; grant lineages vary in popular summaries). In 1836 he passed ~75 acres to Nelson and Honoria on the eastern side — Greystanes as distinct from Prospect west of the creek.
The house looked over farms and grazing; Prospect dolerite weathering grey explained the name. Upper Nepean water scheme resumptions later cut Lawson holdings. Quarrying (Charley → NSW Blue Metal / later Boral narrative) remade the hill. Gates now sit in Pemulwuy interpretation landscape on Greystanes Road.
Timeline
- c.1810 – William Lawson acquires Prospect Hill land (local/Cumberland accounts).

- May 1884 – Arthur Frederick Smart purchases; expands estate; gates/lodge likely this phase (Cumberland).
- 1890s – Passes toward Major Phillip Charley and quarrying potential.
- 1930s – Sold to NSW Blue Metal Company.
- WWII – House occupied by Australian and American servicemen; falls into disrepair (Cumberland / Boral).
- 1946 – Demolished after company regains control (Cumberland/Wikipedia/Boral); DoS 1950–60 window flagged.
- Later – Gates preserved; some house bricks and driveway ironwork incorporated at Greystanes High School entry (Boral history).
Architecture
Live album captions map a full Victorian/Georgian domestic circuit — verandah, steps, main entrance, drawing room, library, bedroom, stables, coachhouse, pond — treat as photographic evidence of the lost house rather than a measured schedule. Cumberland describes a Georgian mansion with service buildings in a picturesque garden. No signed Hallen drawings are cited on the interpretation sign; keep the architect link soft.
People
Nelson Lawson’s naming joke — grey stones in Scots — stuck harder than the house. Smart the sportsman enlarged the park-like holding; Charley and Blue Metal turned Prospect stone into metropolitan aggregate. Wartime billets are the sad last chapter before the 1946 clearance. The gates are the public mnemonic; high-school brick reuse is the quiet fabric afterlife.

What stands today
Greystanes House does not stand. Visit the gates on Greystanes Road, Pemulwuy; read Cumberland’s interpretation signage; understand the house site through quarry and suburb overlay. Do not invent a standing homestead.
