Elmside – Stanmore – NSW

Elmside – Stanmore – NSW

L. C. Russell-Jones’s Stanmore seat (Beautiful Homes) · Estate subdivided 1913 · Fabric fate not confirmed

Two scrapbook plates — a lace-trimmed verandah behind roses, and a drawing room stuffed to the picture-rails — are almost all the live post had. The captions name the owner: L. C. Russell-Jones, Petersham’s solicitor-mayor and one-term MLA. A year after he died in England, “Elmside” hit the auctioneer’s board as building sites. Whether a wall still stands on Cambridge Street is the open question.

At a glance

  • Name: Elmside
  • Address (obituary): Cambridge Street, Stanmore; Beautiful Homes / Walk also associate the name with Harrow Road
  • Notable resident (plate / obituary): Llewellyn Charles Russell-Jones (1855–1912), solicitor
  • Earlier name association: John Hinchcliffe, woolbroker, “lived at Elmside in Harrow Road” (Stanmore Walk) — clarify chain before merging biographies
  • Build year / architect: not found this pass
  • Fate: Estate advertised for subdivision 3 May 1913 (SLNSW plan title); house standing/demolished status unverified

Site & setting

Stanmore between the railway and Harrow / Cambridge Streets was villa country before flat conversions — Hughenden terrace, Murkyslade, The Lodge (Paling/Stuart), Horaceville. Elmside sat in that company. The 1913 plan ties the “well known Stanmore Estate, Elmside” to Cambridge Street and Harrow Road frontages — classic Inner West breakup after a principal’s death. Aboriginal Country: Wangal / Gadigal country of the Eora Nation.

Timeline

  • 1884 – Nearby Hughenden terrace built by woolbroker John Hinchcliffe, then living at Elmside, Harrow Road (Stanmore Walk).
  • 1886 – L. C. Russell-Jones elected Petersham alderman; mayor on multiple occasions; MLA for Petersham 1894–98 (Obituaries Australia).
  • 1887 – City of Sydney Archives letter: Russell Jones seeks meter for residence “Elmside” (document title).
  • c. Beautiful Homes era – Photographed as residence of L. C. Russell-Jones, Esq.
  • November 1911 – Leaves for England with Mrs Russell-Jones; dies suddenly 13 May 1912 at Southport; news reaches Sydney 16 May (Sun).
  • 3 May 1913 – Subdivision auction: part of Stanmore Estate “Elmside” (SLNSW content list).
  • After 1913 – House fate not traced in this pass (demolition vs survival as flats: open).

Architecture & interiors

Plate reading only: substantial two-storey Victorian villa with full-width two-level verandah, striped verandah roof, cast-iron / fretwork balustrading; deep garden and curved drive. Drawing room: striped wallpaper, crowded mantel shelves, palm, lace-draped piano — late-Victorian density. No architect locked.

People & anecdotes

Llewellyn Charles Russell-Jones — Sydney solicitor (Russell-Jones & Barker); Petersham alderman from 1886 to death; mayor repeatedly; MLA Petersham 1894–98 (defeated by J. J. Cohen); company director; president of the Welsh / Cambrian Society. Died abroad; widow and four children. John Hinchcliffe — woolbroker linked to Elmside on Harrow Road and to Hughenden terrace — treat as earlier or parallel Elmside chapter until deeds sort the lots.

1. Keep both live Beautiful Homes plates — re-credit Sydney Living Museums / HHT.

2. SLNSW Z/SP/S14/70 subdivision plan (Elmside, 1913) — once fetched for publish.

3. Cambridge Street / Harrow Road streetscape today — only after matching footprint.

4. Petersham Council / MLA portrait of Russell-Jones if found.

What stands today

Unconfirmed. 1913 subdivision is a strong clue the mansion’s grounds were carved, but do not declare “demolished” without a photo match, demolition notice, or rate-book end date. Walk Cambridge Street with the Beautiful Homes elevation in hand before publishing a “what stands” claim.
