Graythwaite – 20 Edward Street – North Sydney – NSW

Graythwaite – 20 Edward Street – North Sydney – NSW

Victorian Italianate sandstone mansion · Euroka / Graythwaite · Standing — Shore School; SHR #01617 · Live URL says Lavender Bay

On the Edward Street ridge above Union Street, Graythwaite wraps an early North Shore house story inside a grand Victorian Italianate pile. Thomas Walker’s 1830s Euroka, Edwin Sayers’s sandstone additions, and banker Thomas Allwright Dibbs’s 1870s–80s enlargement made the landmark. In 1915 Dibbs gave it to the Crown for wounded soldiers; Red Cross and later hospital chapters followed; Shore School restored it after 2009. The live scrapbook parks it under “Lavender Bay” — geography is North Sydney, about 600 m from Lavender Bay water.

At a glance

  • Address: 20 Edward Street, North Sydney NSW 2060 (also Union Street frontage / drive)
  • Earlier name: Euroka (Walker / early phases)
  • Key figures: Thomas Walker; Edwin Sayers; Thomas Allwright Dibbs (CBC Sydney); Red Cross WWI convalescent use; later nursing home; Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore) from 2009 purchase
  • Architects / builders (SHR / Wikipedia synthesis): Goold & Hilling; Edmund Blacket; builder Aaron Loveridge among named contributors — phases span c.1830s–1885
  • Style: Victorian Italianate sandstone mansion with earlier fabric encapsulated; detached early stables
  • Heritage: NSW SHR #01617 (listed 1 Nov 2002); former RNE
  • Fate: Standing — Shore School administration / heritage use after major restoration completed c.2014
  • Live URL geography: “Lavender Bay / North Shore” — correct LGA/suburb label is North Sydney

Site & setting

Elevated 2.7 ha (approx.) parcel with terraced garden falling south and west toward harbour / river vistas; dual frontages Edward and Union Streets. Mature cultural plantings (figs, palms, rare rainforest specimens noted in SHR landscape text). Aboriginal Country: Cammeraygal. Holtermann / Shore lands adjoin historically — Dibbs sold adjoining Holtermann ground toward the school. Live “Lavender Bay” tag is harbour-side shorthand, not the cadastral suburb of the house.

Timeline

  • 1832+ – Thomas Walker grant / purchase; Euroka residence mid-1830s (SHR).
  • 1850s – Edwin Sayers ownership; large sandstone wing / terracing / orchard traditions.
  • 1867–73 – Mortgagee sale difficulties; Thomas Allwright Dibbs purchases 1873; rebuilds/enlarges c.1875–85; renames Graythwaite (Lake District family association tradition).
  • 1 Oct 1915 – Dibbs transfers property to the Crown for convalescent soldiers; official opening 1 Mar 1916; Red Cross management.
  • 1918+ – Hostel for long-term disablement; later geriatric / nursing-home chapters through late 20th century.
  • 2009 – Shore School purchase (public controversy noted in press).
  • c.2014 – Major restoration unveiled; school heritage / administration use.
  • Today – Standing on Shore campus precinct.

Architecture & interiors

Three-storey-order Victorian Italianate sandstone villa grown over earlier Euroka fabric; kitchen wings; early sandstone stables with loft (oldest stables tradition for North Sydney in SHR wording); later convalescent/hospital ward and service buildings. SHR stresses retention of Victorian finishes, fireplaces, and early timber framing evidence inside the main house despite hospital adaptations. Describe school-era restoration as conservation, not a return to untouched 1880s domestic interiors throughout.

People & anecdotes

Thomas Allwright Dibbs — bank manager credited with steadying CBC Sydney in the 1890s depression; 1915 deed language of sympathy for Empire wounded is the moral centre of the modern story. Early photographic panoramas of Sydney were sometimes taken from Graythwaite when Holtermann’s tower access was restricted (SHR / local history tradition). Community campaign to keep the estate in public hands before the Shore sale is part of North Sydney’s late-20th-century heritage politics — report without relitigating.

Image gallery guidance

  • 1870s Dibbs-era exteriors / garden (SLNSW / Stanton Library).
  • WWI Red Cross convalescent chapter photographs.
  • Stables and terraced garden (publicly visible aspects only).
  • Post-2014 Shore restoration exteriors (school media with credit).

What stands today

Graythwaite stands within the Shore School precinct at 20 Edward Street, North Sydney. Private school grounds — not a casual walk-in museum. Check Shore for any heritage open days before publishing visiting claims.

“Holtermann” Mansion - Lavender Bay - NSW

Holtermann’s Mansion (“The Towers”) – Lavender Bay / North Sydney – NSW

(Correcting live “Holterman” / “Lavendar” / “Lavander”)

Boom-era Italianate mansion with viewing tower · Completed 1874–75 for Bernhardt Otto Holtermann · Demolished / encased mid-1930s within Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore)

Gold paid for the tower; the tower paid for the panorama. Holtermann’s Italianate pile above Lavender Bay was less a quiet villa than a camera platform — Charles Bayliss’s wet-plate harbour views from twenty-seven metres up still define colonial Sydney for many scrapbook readers. Shore School swallowed the site; the 1930s brick encasement finished what time had started. Spell the man’s name with two n’s.

At a glance

  • Name: The Towers (North Sydney Council / contemporary press); live blog “Holterman Mansion”
  • Location: ridge above Lavender Bay, near Blue and William Streets, North Sydney (At Home in North Sydney)
  • Built: commenced wealth-phase move 1874; house completed 1875 (At Home); ADB: palatial house with tower completed 1874 on heights of St Leonards — keep 1874–75 range
  • Builder / owner: Bernhardt Otto Holtermann (1838–1885) — gold miner, MLA St Leonards, photography patron
  • Style: boom-era Italianate with dominant central tower (c.27 m vantage), verandahs, classical pilasters (At Home description)
  • Famous use: platform for Charles Bayliss / Holtermann large-format harbour panoramas (Philadelphia 1876 etc.)
  • After Holtermann: bought by Thomas Dibbs (of neighbouring Graythwaite); sold to Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore)
  • Fate: mid-1930s — house and tower encased in modern brickwork and essentially demolished (At Home); Shore campus occupies the ground
  • Spelling fixes: Holtermann (not Holterman); Lavender Bay (not Lavendar/Lavander)

Site & setting

North Sydney / St Leonards heights overlooking Lavender Bay and the harbour — Cammeraygal Country. Holtermann first occupied sprawling St Leonards Lodge at Crows Nest, then built The Towers on the ridge. Neighbouring Graythwaite (Dibbs) frames the later sale story. The tower’s purpose was photography as much as display: views north-east and north-west as well as the famous harbour sweep (At Home).

Timeline

  • 1838 – Bernhardt Otto Holtermann born Hamburg (ADB).
  • 1858–59 – Arrives Australia; meets Beyers; Hill End / Hawkins Hill years.
  • 19–20 Oct 1872 – Star of Hope / Holtermann specimen — world’s largest reef-gold specimen tradition (ADB: 630 lb / 286 kg). Soft: some popular pages round wealth to “1871”.
  • c.1871–74 – Leaves active prospecting; Sydney years; St Leonards Lodge then mansion project.
  • 1874–75 – The Towers built/completed; stained-glass window of Holtermann with the “nugget” (ADB).
  • 1875 – Bayliss panoramas from the unfinished/finished tower; claimed among largest wet-plate photographs.
  • 1876 / 1878 – Exhibition medals Philadelphia / Paris (ADB).
  • 1882–85 – MLA for St Leonards; advocates North Shore progress and a harbour bridge contribution (ADB).
  • 29 Apr 1885 – Dies on his 47th birthday; buried St Thomas’s (ADB).
  • Post-1885 – Dibbs purchase; sale to Shore School.
  • Mid-1930s – Mansion/tower encased / demolished into school fabric (At Home).
  • Live blog 2021-03 – Single historic image stub, misspelt title.

Architecture & interiors

Italianate mansion typical of mining-magnate display: central tower with Corinthian-suggestion pilasters, verandah cast iron, decorative masonry (At Home). Interiors sparsely described in consulted sources — contemporary papers called it fit for a nobleman (Singleton Argus 27 Oct 1875, cited At Home). Stained-glass self-portrait with the specimen is the signature interior anecdote (ADB). Prefer SLNSW exterior/panorama plates over inventing room schedules.

People & anecdotes

Bernhardt Otto Holtermann — German-born miner-made-good; Hill End partner of Beyers; MLA; immigrant-publicist via photography. Charles Bayliss (and earlier Beaufoy Merlin) — the cameras behind the Holtermann Collection. Thomas Dibbs — Graythwaite neighbour; intermediary owner. Shore School — long custodian of the site after the mansion’s erasure.

Image gallery guidance

1. Keep live historic mansion/tower photograph.

2. SLNSW: The Towers shortly after completion 1875 (drive unfinished) — At Home hero image.

3. Bayliss panorama sections from the tower (Lavender Bay / Milsons Point).

4. Holtermann with specimen / stained-glass tradition illustrations.

5. Modern Shore campus view of the site (what replaced it) — label clearly as successor fabric.

What stands today

The Towers does not stand as a readable mansion. The Shore School campus occupies the Lavender Bay ridge site; mid-1930s brick encasement destroyed the Italianate house and tower. Remember the place through the Holtermann Collection at the State Library of NSW and through surviving panorama plates — not through a house museum.
