Lactura – 24 Lang Road – Centennial Park – NSW
Federation Free Classical / Anglo-Dutch parkside mansion · c.1906–1910 · Standing — private · Sydney LEP I111 · Lang Road HCA
The live title spells it Lectura; the house, the LEP and every serious inventory spell it Lactura. Red brick, a three-storey gabled bay, cast-iron lace verandahs and a copper-domed oriel sit on the 1905 Centennial Park covenant frontage — not Erskineville, and not Walsholme next door. Press tradition ties the first household to Edith Meacle (wife of Paddington mayor Francis / Frank Meacle); later chapters include chocolatiers then the Leckie years. Welcome to Lactura — keep the URL’s “Lectura” typo as the canonical live target, lead the body with the correct name.

- Fate: Standing — private residence (not a museum)
Site & setting
Lang Road’s western parkside edge of the 1905 Centennial Park lands subdivision — covenants banned terraces and timber, insisted on brick or stone with slate or tile, and set a high minimum build cost (HCA statement). Lactura occupies a prominent corner lot with dual-access tradition and deep garden setbacks. Neighbours on the same statutory run include Coowong (22, I110), Devoncliffe (26, I112), Wallaroy (20, I109), Biltmore (14, I107) and Walshome / Walsholme (12, I106). Separate the empty Erskineville House stub on this blog — that title has no Lactura content.
Timeline
- 1904–05 – Centennial Park western fringe subdivided; Lang Road covenants in force.
- c.1906–1910 – Lactura built; press tradition for Edith Meacle household; Federation Details dates the fabric c.1910.
- 1907 – City Archives note Frank Meacle in Lang Road asphalting / kerbing correspondence (municipal context, not a title deed).
- 1998 – South Sydney DA U98/00888 alterations & additions approved (City Archives A-00639793); same year Leckie purchase from the Francis family (press).
- 2016 – Leckies list Lactura (Chancellor / Daily Telegraph; auction chapter).
- 2017 – Press coverage of high-value sale and temporary celebrity tenancy (Nine.com.au).
- Today – Standing private house; LEP I111 + Lang Road HCA.
Architecture & interiors
Prefer Federation Details / South Sydney inventory description over agent poetry. A very fine Federation Anglo-Dutch / Free Classical red-brick house of two storeys with a three-storey gabled bay: rendered detail, unglazed terracotta hipped and gabled roof, heavy mouldings and corbels, cantilevered balcony to one side, two-storey return verandah with cast-iron columns and lace balustrades, timber double-hung windows and fanlights, five-panel doors with sidelights and fanlights, oriel with domed copper roof to the gable end, decorative gabled pediment with stucco shell and acanthus leaf motifs, masonry finials. Sale copy adds soaring ornate ceilings, leadlight, marble fireplaces and polished floors — keep as secondary interior claims. Will Dangar gardens, heated pool and dual-level pool house/cinema are later landscape and amenity chapters, not 1910 fabric.
People & anecdotes
Edith Meacle — press-cited first household; wife of Paddington mayor Francis / Frank Meacle. Soft until a Sands Directory or rate assessment line is attached; do not upgrade to hard fact from sales journalism alone. Rodney & Suzanne Francis — Just William Chocolates; pre-Leckie owners (press). David & Skye Leckie — long late-twentieth / early-twenty-first-century chapter from 1998; high-profile entertainers’ house in social pages. Architect remains unidentified in statutory sources — refuse neighbouring-house attributions.
Gallery placeholder note
Do not invent historic photo URLs — keep the single live scrapbook image if it shows this house; captions and sequence guidance below for the merge pass.
1. Keep the live post photograph if it is Lactura’s Lang Road elevation; caption as Lactura (correct spelling).
2. Federation Details / inventory exterior — red brick, gabled bay, copper oriel, cast-iron verandah.
3. Streetscape with Coowong (22) / Devoncliffe (26) for HCA context.
4. Do not drop Erskineville contemporary-house photos into this post.
5. Caption Leckie-era / Dangar garden / pool-house shots as later chapters.
