Leichhardt Lodge – Newtown Road / Brown Street – Newtown – NSW

Leichhardt Lodge – Newtown Road / Brown Street precinct – Newtown – NSW

Mid-19th-century suburban villa of W.H. Aldis · Documented 1858–1862 · Demolished (date unknown) — estate subdivided

Tobacconist William H. Aldis named his Newtown Road house for his friend the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. The State Library’s 1 March 1862 albumen print — the live scrapbook’s entire post — shows a two-storey verandah house in garden grounds. Stephen Campbell Brown later made it a Brown Street showpiece; subdivision plans still label the Leichhardt Lodge Estate. When the wreckers came is not yet pinned — leave that blank until deeds or a demolition notice surface.

People & anecdotes

William H. Aldis — George Street tobacconist; friend of Ludwig Leichhardt; DoS note also ties him to Hyde Park Barracks archaeology context as a named tobacconist. Ludwig Leichhardt — namesake only (house, not the explorer’s residence). Stephen Campbell Brown — later long-term occupant / estate name on subdivision plans.

What stands today

The lodge does not stand. Streets of the former estate cover the ground. The scrapbook value is the dated photograph plus Aldis–Leichhardt naming story.
